Lord, Duke Chevalier (Sir) Ruben Anthony de Black Eagle Castle de Normandie was a veteran of many campaigns. Most campaigns were fought as a mercenary along with his company de Lances. A company de the ordinance was intended to be composed of one-hundred Lances. Each Lance was to have nine men; an armored cavalryman, his page, and his squire; three archers with horses; and three infantryman, including a pike man, a crossbowman; and one man armed with a hand culverin. Chevalier Ruben Anthony company was composed de 900 men of whom 700 were primary combatants.

In 1399, Richard II gave permission to Sir Edward Dalyngrigge to award Sir Ruben Anthony for valor and gratitude for his company de Lances participation. In 1409, Charles the VI awarded Sir Ruben Anthony the Castle de Gisors (Normandie) for his services in many battles during the 100 Year Wars. After the Battle of Agincourt (1415), won by the English under Henry V, the English controlled most of Northern France. It appeared that England would shortly conquer France and unite the two countries under one crown. At this crucial moment in French history, a young and illiterate peasant girl, Joan of Arc (1412-1431) helped to save France. Protecting Joan of Arc’s right flank was Chevalier (Sir) Ruben Anthony’s company de Lances. The Castle de Black Eagle helped save France from English tyranny.
Chevalier Ruben Anthony returned to his Bodiam Castle where his sword would never see any large campaigns again. He now dedicates his life to jousting tournaments and training of young squires and knights. His Black Eagle Castle is known world wide for superior knightly skills taught at Bodiam.
